Madhya Pradesh on war footing for flood relief

Bhopal: In response to relentless heavy rainfall and widespread flooding, the Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a war-footing rescue and relief operation. Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced that Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is continuously monitoring the situation and directing all officials, from district collectors to police, to work without delay. The state has already received 60% more rainfall than its average, leading to a challenging and rapidly evolving situation.

= Rescue efforts and emergency teams

Specialized teams have been deployed across the state to handle the crisis. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has five teams in key locations like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Dhar, successfully rescuing 22 people. The State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), equipped with modern rescue gear, has established 259 disaster response centers and 111 Quick Response Teams in vulnerable areas. Since June 1st, SDERF has conducted 432 rescue operations, saving 3,628 people and 94 animals. In addition, thousands of trained “Disaster Mitra” volunteers are assisting in the relief efforts.

= Monitoring and public communication

The state has set up a 24/7 Situation Room in the Mantralaya to monitor the situation, with a toll-free helpline (1079) available for public assistance. The “Sachet” portal has sent out 75 red alerts three hours in advance to at-risk citizens, and a Disaster Warning and Response System provides real-time alerts for heavy rain, floods, and lightning.

The state government has also been quick to provide financial aid. So far, Rs 28.49 crore in relief funds has been distributed to flood victims. With 128 houses completely destroyed and 2,333 partially damaged, the government has ensured that there is no shortage of funds or essential supplies like food and medicine. The state’s hospitals are also on high alert to handle any medical emergencies. The ongoing efforts show a coordinated and robust response to protect lives and property in the face of this natural calamity.
