- ADM and excise official conduct inspection on orders of NHRC
Bhopal: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi, has taken cognizance of a complaint regarding the opening of a liquor shop in Bhopal’s Arera Colony. Residents allege that the shop is located close to a children’s hospital and a temple, and was illegally established on a residential plot—violating zoning regulations.
According to reports, the Commission took up the matter on July 28 under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. A bench led by member Priyank Kanoongo directed the state government to issue a notice to the Bhopal District Magistrate and submit an investigation report within 15 days.
When no report was filed, a reminder was sent on August 19. The Commission then issued notices to the Excise Commissioner and District Magistrate, summoning them to appear in Delhi with a report on October 3. Following this, a team from the Excise Department inspected the site last week.
Residents demand immediate closure
On Monday, ADM Shakya and Assistant Excise Commissioner Dhakad conducted a one-hour site investigation and recorded residents’ statements. Locals revealed that the shop is adjacent to a hospital and just 42 meters from a temple. They demanded its immediate closure, threatening to protest if action is not taken.
Complainant Purnendu Shukla stated that the liquor shop violates not only zoning laws but also the rights of residents.
