Life convict bail jumper arrested after months on the run: Delhi Police

New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) Delhi Police on Monday arrested a life convict who had jumped bail after the dismissal of his appeal by the Delhi High Court, an officer said.

According to the police, the accused, Bhim Mahto, was convicted in 2002 for the 1999 murder of his brother, Kishan Mahto, in a case registered at Nabi Karim police station.

He had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court at Tis Hazari, but was later released on bail while his appeal was pending before the High Court.

On October 30, the Delhi High Court dismissed Mahto’s appeal and directed him to surrender by November 5.

However, Mahto failed to comply with the court’s order and went absconding, following which a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by the sessions court.

Amid the probe in this case, a special police team from Nabi Karim police station was constituted to trace the fugitive.

“The team carried out sustained surveillance in the accused’s native village in Bihar and other suspected hideouts, while also analysing technical and digital intelligence to track his movements across the Delhi-NCR region,” said Nidhin Valsan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District).

He said that based on specific inputs, the team located Mahto in Sukhrali Enclave in Gurugram’s Sector 17. “A late-night operation conducted on Friday, with assistance from local intelligence units, led to his arrest,” the officer added.

Mahto has been taken into custody and will be produced before the court after completion of legal formalities, the officer said in his statement.

Further investigation into this case is ongoing, Valsan stated.
