Ranchi, Nov 30 (UNI) Former India captain Virat Kohli delivered a sensational performance at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, smashing a magnificent century in the first ODI against South Africa and breaking one of Sachin Tendulkar’s most celebrated records. Kohli’s ton marked his 52nd ODI century, surpassing Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries by any player in a single format.
Kohli’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression and technique. He reached his century in 102 balls, hitting 7 fours and 6 sixes, and later extended his innings to 135 runs, studded with 11 fours and 7 sixes. With this feat, Kohli also became the first batsman to score three ODI centuries at the JSCA Stadium, further solidifying his dominance at the venue.
Prior to this match, Kohli had scored 77, 139, 45, and 123* in his earlier appearances at Ranchi. Today’s hundred not only added to his impressive JSCA record but also marked his 83rd international century across formats. Kohli now holds the record for the most centuries in ODI cricket, overtaking Tendulkar’s long-standing tally of 49.
The match, however, saw a major security lapse. Moments after Kohli completed his century, a fan breached security, ran onto the field, and touched Kohli’s feet seeking blessings. Security personnel rushed in shortly after and escorted the fan off the field, but the incident has raised serious questions about crowd management and player safety at the venue.
Apart from individual brilliance, Kohli’s innings was complemented by a strong partnership with Rohit Sharma. The duo added 136 runs for the second wicket, stabilising India’s innings and entertaining the packed Ranchi crowd.
With today’s century, Kohli has also set a new record for the most ODI centuries against South Africa, with six tons to his name. His latest achievement has further cemented his stature as one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time.
