Kharge congratulates Tarique Rahman, BNP on Bangladesh poll victory

‎New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) ‎Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for their victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, underscoring the importance of democratic stability and regional peace.

‎In a message posted on X, Kharge said, “On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I congratulate Tarique Rahman and the BNP for winning the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.”

‎Highlighting the close ties between the two neighbouring nations, the Congress chief emphasised the shared historical and cultural legacy binding the peoples of India and Bangladesh.

‎“India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and a multitude of other commonalities,” he said.

‎Kharge further expressed hope that the new political mandate in Dhaka would strengthen democratic values and foster inclusive governance. “A democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh would always be supported by all Indians for the stability and peace of our region,” he added.

‎India and Bangladesh have maintained close bilateral relations since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, cooperating on issues ranging from trade and connectivity to security and cultural exchanges. Political developments in Dhaka are closely watched in New Delhi, given the two countries’ shared border and strategic interests in South Asia.

‎The BNP, one of Bangladesh’s principal political parties, has played a significant role in the country’s political landscape. Tarique Rahman, a senior BNP leader, has been a central figure in the party’s leadership.

‎Kharge’s message reflects the Congress party’s stated commitment to supporting democratic processes in neighbouring countries and reiterates the broader consensus in India on fostering stable and constructive ties with Bangladesh.
