Kerala’s PSU revival: Profit-making units jump to 27, turnover hits Rs 2,440 crore

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 10 (UNI) The number of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under the Kerala State Industries Department operating in profit has risen to 27.

In October alone, 27 PSUs registered profits, while 25 PSUs operated in profit during the April–September period. Compared to the same period last year, 14 additional PSUs have moved into profit, and 7 PSUs have increased their profit levels.

Revenue increased by 9.07 percent, with 32 PSUs recording improved turnover. The total operating profit stands at Rs 27.30 crore, reflecting a growth of Rs 82.09 crore. During the same period last year, only 11 PSUs were in profit.

The number of PSUs generating net profit has also risen to 17, up from 9 last year. Total turnover of the PSUs increased to Rs 2,440.14 crore, compared to Rs 2,299 crore in the previous year, according to the report.

Among the 48 PSUs, Chavara KMML recorded the highest operating profit of Rs 4,548.64 lakh. In October alone, the operating profit was Rs 1,461.24 lakh. Keltron achieved an operating profit of Rs 1,268.20 lakh — a significant turnaround from losses last year. Keltron ECL registered an operating profit of Rs 1,184.59 lakh.

The PSUs currently operating in profit include: KMML, Keltron, Keltron ECL, Keltron Components, TCC, Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Company, Coir Corporation, KSIE, TELK, SIFL, Mineral Development Corporation, KCCPL, Coirfed, Silk, Artisans Development Corporation, FIT, Malappuram Cooperative Spinning Mill, K. Karunakaran Memorial Cooperative Spinning Mill, Foam Mattings, Alappuzha Cooperative Spinning Mill, Small Industries Development Corporation, Priyadarshini Cooperative Spinning Mill, Trivandrum Spinning Mill, and Coir Machinery Manufacturing Company, Industries Minister P Rajeey said in a release.

Kerala’s PSUs have demonstrated a performance that stands as a model for the entire nation. Keltron has emerged as one of the most prominent PSUs in the country in areas including defence, aerospace, electronics, and AI-based technologies.

Keltron has played a key role in the construction of the naval warship INS Tamal and achieved a turnover of over Rs 1,000 crore. Kerala Automobiles Ltd has entered the electric scooter market through a joint venture.

To ensure high-quality medicines, KSDP opened a marketing centre. KEL expanded its business with new orders, including those from the Karnataka Government. KCCPL entered into product diversification.

Coir Corporation enhanced profits by opening premium outlets, including at Lulu Mall, and recorded sales of Rs 60 lakh.

In the last State Budget, Rs 42.50 crore was allocated to PSUs to settle statutory dues of employees. The review also noted that 32 PSUs have implemented safety audits.
