Kerala CM to launch Vizhinjam International Seaport Phase-II on Jan 24

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the construction works of the second phase of development of the Vizhinjam International Seaport on January 24 at 4 pm.

The event will also mark the inauguration of EXIM cargo services, facilitating both import and export operations from the port. In addition, the newly constructed port road connecting Vizhinjam Seaport to the National Highway bypass will be opened.

The Phase-II development, involving an investment of nearly ₹10,000 crore, is aimed at substantially expanding the port’s infrastructure and operational capacity. On completion, the annual handling capacity of the port is expected to increase from 1.5 million TEUs to 5 million TEUs.

As part of the expansion, the berth length will be increased from 800 metres to 2,000 metres, while the breakwater will be extended from 3 km to 4 km.

The second phase will also include facilities such as a railway yard, multi-purpose berth, liquid terminal and tank farm, further enhancing Vizhinjam’s role as a key international maritime hub. The function will be presided over by Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan.
