Pathanamthitta (Kerala), Oct 13 (UNI) In a landmark achievement for Kerala’s healthcare system, the State has recorded its lowest-ever infant mortality rate, reaffirming its leadership in public health even as it launched an intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Campaign aimed at safeguarding every child from preventable diseases.
The massive immunization drive will cover 21,11,010 children across Kerala through 22,383 vaccination booths, including mobile and transit centers to reach every corner of the State.
Over 44,766 trained volunteers have been deployed to manage the booths, assist families, and ensure smooth and efficient vaccination services.
For those unable to participate on October 12, the campaign will continue through October 13 and 14, with health workers and volunteers conducting door-to-door visits to administer the oral drops.
Officials said this approach will help ensure complete coverage and protect even the most remote households from the risk of disease.
Health and Women & Child Development Minister Veena George urged parents to ensure that all children under five years receive the oral polio vaccine (OPV) drops.
“Every parent must ensure that their child under five years receives the oral polio drops. Let us join together in this intensified mission to eradicate polio once and for all,” she said, reaffirming Kerala’s commitment to disease prevention and child welfare.
Kerala has been polio-free since 2000, while India achieved the milestone in 2011, and the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the country polio-free in March 2014.
Despite this achievement, Veena George cautioned that vigilance must not wane. “Neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to report polio cases. Sustained preventive efforts are vital to ensure that the virus never returns,” she noted.
The Minister praised the dedicated efforts of health workers, volunteers, and local self-government institutions, crediting their teamwork for the State’s impressive public health record.
Kerala’s consistent focus on preventive healthcare and immunization, she said, has been instrumental in bringing down infant mortality to its lowest level in history.
Public health experts have also lauded the State’s integrated approach, noting that Kerala’s robust healthcare network and community participation have set a national benchmark in child health and immunization coverage.
With the new campaign underway, Kerala once again underscores its mission to remain a model State in public health — committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background or location, receives protection against preventable diseases
