Jairam Ramesh highlights India-Russia ties are nothing new

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday emphasized that India-Russia relations are built on decades of partnership, as the 23rd Annual Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin begins.
“The 23rd Annual Summit between the President of Russia and the Prime Minister of India in the last 26 years begins today. These ties go back even longer,” Ramesh highlighted in a post on handle X. Ramesh pointed to the 1955 visit of Soviet leaders Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev, highlighting it as a foundation for enduring collaboration.
“This historic visit led to key institutions like the Bhilai Steel Plant and IIT Bombay, and paved the way for technology transfers, including MiG aircraft manufacturing by HAL,” Ramesh noted. The partnership shaped growth of public sector companies like ONGC and IDPL, he added.
Ramesh stressed that current India-Russia ties are a “direct continuation” of the 1955 partnership, with the summit focusing on defence, energy, and economic cooperation. “Exactly 70 years ago the top two leaders of the USSR came to India. Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev were here for an extraordinary 19 days: from Nov 18 to 30, 1955, and again from Dec 7 to 14, 1955. This followed Jawaharlal Nehru’s journey to the USSR six months earlier,” Ramesh said.
