Jairam questions delay in Nuclear Energy Bills, seeks clarity on Winter session

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh today expressed surprise over the delay and questioned whether the Bills would be introduced in the upcoming Winter session of Parliament.
In a post on X, the Congress general secretary said, “When the FM presented the 2025-26 Budget, grand promises were made to give a boost to nuclear energy by amending (i) the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 ; and (ii) the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 to allow private companies to establish and run nuclear power plants,” he said.
The former union Minister said, “However, somewhat surprisingly, neither of these two Bills were even introduced in the recently-concluded session of Parliament. Will the Bills be introduced in the Winter session three months hence? Moreover, what about a Bill to establish an independent regulatory body that is not part of the atomic energy establishment? This becomes essential if private investment is to be encouraged”.
Ramesh also recalled the pivotal roles played by the late Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, with the full backing of then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, in finalizing the original Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010.
“It also bears recall that with the full support of the-then PM Dr Manmohan Singh, both Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj had played an important role in finalising the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010. The proposed amendments will undo what they had accomplished,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.
