New Delhi, Dec 21 (UNI) Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday highlighted the significance of the MGNREGA Sameeksha, a compilation of 145 field studies on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) conducted between 2008 and 2012. The anthology, released by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July 2012, provides valuable insights into the impact and challenges of MGNREGA.
Ramesh emphasized that the MGNREGA Sameeksha is “required reading” amidst the controversy surrounding the government’s decision to scrap the landmark legislation. He criticized the government’s move, stating that two decades of progress have been overturned without consultation and by sidestepping parliamentary convention and procedure.
The MGNREGA Sameeksha includes studies by various organizations, including the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), and provides a comprehensive analysis of the scheme’s implementation, challenges, and impact on rural employment and poverty alleviation.
Ramesh’s comments come amidst widespread protests against the government’s decision to replace MGNREGA with the Viksit Bharat G RAM G Bill, which guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household annually.
