Jerusalem, Dec 15 (UNI) The head of the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet) Ronen Bar and the head of the Jordanian General Intelligence Service Ahmad Husni held secret talks on the situation in Syria, the Axios portal reported, citing Israeli officials.
Bar and Husni were accompanied by senior military officers of the two countries, they discussed the situation in Syria and the interaction of Israel and Jordan with Syria’s armed opposition, which is now forming a transitional government, the publication said.
According to Israeli officials, the parties also discussed the alleged supply of weapons from Iran through Jordan to armed groups in the West Bank.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue to conduct raids in the West Bank to prevent terrorist attempts. Since October 2023, the Israeli military has detained more than 5,000 suspects in terrorist activities. It is believed that about half of the detainees have ties to Palestinian movement Hamas.
Syria’s armed opposition captured the Syrian capital of Damascus on December 8. Russian officials have said that Assad stepped down as president after holding negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum. Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister on December 10.
