Iraqi Hezbollah leader killed

Baghdad/Brussels, March 17 (UNI) Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia, aligned to Tehran, on Tuesday, announced the death of a senior commander, Abu Ali al-Askari.

The development marks the second reported killing of a top leader of the group in recent days.

The militia earlier confirmed that another senior figure, Abu Ali al-Amiri, was killed in a strike that targeted one of its offices located in Baghdad.

The incidents come amid a rising cycle of hostilities between Iran-backed militias in Iraq and the United States, with both sides reporting exchanges of attacks in recent weeks. The Hezbollah group had earlier claimed a drone attack on a US air base outside Baghdad.

Meanwhile, leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have expressed “grave concern” over the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In a joint statement, the leaders condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, including strikes affecting civilians and personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

They also reiterated support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah, cautioning that any potential Israeli ground offensive could have “devastating humanitarian consequences” and risk prolonging the conflict.
