Investigation on police launched after Amit Verma’s murder

  • Bhopal police under fire

Bhopal – The recent murder of Amit Verma in Bhopal has triggered a significant internal investigation within the city’s police force, raising serious concerns about their handling of known criminals. The killing, allegedly at the hands of notorious criminal Naseem Banne Khan, has prompted the Police Commissioner to order an inquiry into the actions of two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and two Station House Officers (THs) for potential negligence. DCP Riyaz Iqbal of Zone-3 is leading the investigation.

Unheeded warnings: A trail of missed opportunities

Naseem Banne Khan, who has a staggering 34 criminal cases against him, reportedly exhibited alarming behaviors just before the murder, including causing a disturbance at his girlfriend’s home and attacking a man with a sword near Bada Talab. Despite police receiving complaints about these incidents, no immediate action was taken. This lack of intervention is now believed to have created the vacuum that allowed the tragic murder of Amit Verma to occur.

A case of mistaken identity: The tragic end of Amit Verma

On the night of June 28-29, in Leeladhar Colony, Naseem and his associates shot 22-year-old Amit Verma. While the intended target was reportedly Raja Khatik, with whom Naseem had a rivalry, the bullet struck Amit, killing him instantly. Police have since arrested Naseem from Betul, along with his mother, girlfriend, and four other accomplices.

The ongoing investigation under DCP Riyaz Iqbal aims to determine who is accountable for the lapses in surveillance and the failure to act on prior complaints. This incident serves as a stark reminder for the Bhopal Police, highlighting the critical need for heightened vigilance and prompt response to prevent such tragic outcomes in the future.
