Intense Rains Lash Madhya Pradesh

  • 12 districts under extreme alert

Bhopal,  Madhya Pradesh continues to experience heavy rainfall as the Southwest Monsoon remains highly active across the state. An “extremely heavy rain” alert has been issued for 12 districts, including Chhatarpur, Damoh, Katni, Panna, Maihar, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Umaria, Sidhi, Singrauli, and Jabalpur. Additionally, 27 other districts, including Dewas, Indore, Sehore, Bhopal, Betul, Chhindwara, Raisen, Narsinghpur, Sagar, Neemuch, Sheopurkalan, Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Niwari, Satna, Mandla, Seoni, Shahdol, Dindori, Anuppur, Singrauli, Dhar, Jhabua, and Barwani, are under a “heavy rain with lightning” alert.

The incessant downpour has caused the Harsi Dam in Shivpuri to overflow, raising flood concerns for nearly two dozen villages. Elsewhere, a house wall collapsed in Maihar, while homes in Sidhi were inundated. Gwalior witnessed significant waterlogging in several areas after just 40 minutes of rain, with low-lying settlements experiencing waist-deep water. In Damoh, a bus became precariously suspended from a culvert while attempting to cross a swollen drain, though passengers were safely rescued.

Over the past 24 hours, Malthon in Sagar district recorded the highest rainfall at 112 mm. Other significant rainfall figures include Damoh (103 mm), Kesli (Sagar) (93.1 mm), Seoni-Malwa (Narmadapuram) (89 mm), Khirkiya (Harda) (87.7 mm), and Katangi (Balaghat) (86.6 mm).

Regarding temperatures, Sheopur recorded the highest maximum at 34.4°C, while Pachmarhi experienced the lowest minimum at 17.2°C. Among major cities, Ujjain recorded the highest maximum at 32.5°C.

An “orange alert” for heavy rain has been issued for Singrauli, Shahdol, Umaria, Dindori, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, and Pandhurna. Rainfall alerts also extend to Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Narmadapuram, Betul, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Datia, Gwalior, and Morena. The continuous rainfall around the capital Bhopal has led to an increase in the water level of the city’s Upper Lake.
