Indore Water Tragedy : Patwari slams BJP Govt for ‘criminal negligence’

By Special Correspondent

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jeetu Patwari has held the BJP-led state government responsible for the deaths and large-scale illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore, describing the incident as a result of gross negligence, insensitivity and arrogance of power.

Addressing the media, Patwari alleged that the BJP leadership had become intoxicated with power, accusing ministers of abusing journalists who raised public concerns. “This is not democracy but a reflection of an authoritarian mindset,” he said.

He pointed out that despite Indore repeatedly placing its trust in the BJP—electing MPs, MLAs, a mayor and the entire municipal corporation—the city had been repaid with toxic water and loss of lives. Patwari claimed that while reports indicated 13 deaths, the State Government had acknowledged only four, raising questions over alleged attempts to downplay the tragedy.

Demanding strict action, Patwari said cases of culpable homicide should be registered against responsible officials and public representatives, including the mayor. He called for immediate resignations, adequate compensation of Rs 1 crore for each victim’s family, and the appointment of an empowered, independent minister to oversee accountability.

He emphasised that the issue was humanitarian, not political, and asserted that the Congress would fight for justice “from the streets to the legislature.”
