Indian Navy deploys 4 more ships for cyclone relief in Sri Lanka

New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) As part of the ongoing Operation Sagar Bandhu, the Indian Navy has deployed four more ships to provide Search and Rescue and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support to cyclone-affected Sri Lanka. The ships include INS Gharial, and three Landing Craft Utility (LCUs) 54, 51 and 57.

In a statement, a Naval spokesperson said that INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri and INS Sukanya had earlier rendered relief assistance and heliborne support.

The three LCUs arrived in Colombo on Sunday morning and have handed over critical relief material to the Sri Lankan authorities. INS Gharial is scheduled to arrive at Trincomalee on Monday to continue the humanitarian assistance mission.

With 1,000 tons of supplies, this deployment of ships underscores the strong people-to-people ties between India and Sri Lanka and Indian Navy’s commitment to providing timely humanitarian assistance to IOR neighbours, the spokesperson added.
