The visit reflects India’s firm commitment to enhancing regional maritime cooperation, improving interoperability with partner agencies, and fostering goodwill across the IOR.

During their stay, the ICG ships will engage with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) through professional interactions focused on capacity building and the exchange of best practices. Beyond operational engagements, the visit includes courtesy calls, friendly sports fixtures and cultural exchanges to promote camaraderie and people-to-people ties. The crew will also undertake community service activities, underscoring India’s emphasis on constructive outreach and goodwill. The port call will showcase India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, reinforcing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The ships will be open to visitors, allowing local dignitaries, students, youth and community groups to interact with ICG personnel and gain insights into Indian Coast Guard operations.

In line with the Government of India’s focus on environmental stewardship, ICGS Varaha and ICGS Atulya will conduct beach clean-up drives and marine environmental awareness programmes, engaging local youth organisations and community groups under the Puneet Sagar Abhiyan.

During their stay in Colombo, the ICG ships will also participate in the Republic Day ceremony at India House, celebrating India’s national day overseas and further strengthening diplomatic and people-to-people relations. Following the port call, the vessels will undertake Exercise SAGAREX off the Colombo coast on 27 January 2026, focusing on coordinated pollution response operations with Sri Lankan counterparts.
