Indian Coast Guard Boosts Maritime Self-Reliance with New Waterjet Facility in Goa

New Delhi: Director General DG Paramesh Sivamani, AVSM, PTM, TM, inaugurated the MJP India Waterjet Production & Testing Facility in Goa, marking a significant step in India’s journey towards maritime self-reliance. The event was attended by senior officials including IG Sudhir Sahni, TM, DDG (Materiel & Maintenance), along with international and industry representatives such as Jonas Tegstrom (CEO) and Stefan Sjölin (COO) of MJP AB, and MPS Gill, MD & CEO of MJP India.

More than 100 MJP waterjet propulsion systems are already operational on Coast Guard vessels, with 42 additional units planned for ships currently under construction. The newly inaugurated facility is expected to strengthen maintenance capability, indigenous testing, and long-term operational sustenance.

The Director General praised MJP AB for establishing advanced production and testing capabilities in India under a Manufacturing and Transfer of Technology framework. With this development, India becomes the third country after the United States and South Korea to host such a facility. He emphasised the Coast Guard’s continued commitment to indigenisation, noting that the milestone is the outcome of sustained multi-level engagements since 2023.

The facility is projected to create a robust domestic supply chain, promote skilled employment, energise the MSME ecosystem, and serve as a regional hub for South Asia. During the visit, the Director General also reviewed progress at Chowgule & Company Pvt Ltd on six indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicles for the Coast Guard—India’s first such project with 50% indigenous content. The first delivery is scheduled for May 2026, aimed at further strengthening coastal security.
