New Delhi, Aug 25 (UNI) The Government and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today formalised a pivotal collaboration aimed at alleviating the global hunger crisis by signing a Letter of Intent (LoI).
Under this initiative, the Government’s Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), will facilitate the supply of fortified rice to the WFP. This strategic move seeks to address the food and nutritional needs of vulnerable populations affected by crises across the world, said a statement from the Consumer Affairs Ministry.
The partnership signals the strength of global cooperation, with India leveraging its status as an agricultural surplus nation to provide life-saving assistance to those grappling with food insecurity.
“India’s commitment is rooted in the timeless principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family. Our shared responsibility towards humanity underpins this endeavour to extend humanitarian support to communities facing acute food shortages,” said Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution.
Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of WFP, remarked, “We deeply value India’s steadfast commitment to fostering a food-secure and peaceful world. This partnership signals our shared resolve to intensify global efforts and ensure sustained aid for those most in need.”
Amid rising global food insecurity and shrinking humanitarian funding, the Skau hailed India’s generous contribution as a beacon of hope.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries, including Ashutosh Agnihotri, Chairman and Managing Director of the Food Corporation of India, Samir Wanmali, Regional Director, WFP Asia-Pacific Regional Office, Elisabeth Faure, WFP India Country Director, besides senior officers of the Department of Food and Public Distribution.
