India-US Trade Deal Fully Protects Farmers; Opposition Spreading Rumours and Avoiding Debate: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

New Delhi। Amid allegations by the opposition regarding the India–US Trade Deal, Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan asserted that the agreement completely safeguards India’s agricultural and dairy sectors. He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, farmers’ interests were declared non-negotiable from the very beginning of negotiations. Addressing the media in New Delhi, Chouhan emphasised that staple grains, millets, fruits, major crops and dairy products remain entirely secure, adding that the agreement is designed to create new opportunities rather than risks for both small and large farmers.

Clarifying apprehensions about the possible impact of American agricultural products on Indian markets, the Minister said no sudden or disruptive entry of foreign goods would be permitted. He noted that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had already clarified the matter in Parliament and reiterated that no market has been opened in a way that could harm domestic producers. Chouhan highlighted that reduced tariffs under the agreement are expected to strengthen exports of rice, spices and textiles, which in turn would benefit millions of cotton growers across the country.

Launching a sharp political attack, Chouhan accused the opposition of spreading misinformation and creating confusion among farmers. Referring to the conduct of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, he said sitting on the steps of Parliament and making “chhichhora” remarks reflected frustration and desperation rather than constructive debate. He also questioned how the government could present detailed explanations if it was not being allowed to speak in Parliament, alleging that opposition members were obstructing discussions while continuing to level accusations. Reaffirming the government’s stand, Chouhan said farmers are the nation’s “Annadata” and their welfare remains the government’s foremost priority.
