New Delhi, June 10 (UNI) India has taken up with the US Embassy in New Delhi the case of an Indian student being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by US officials at Newark Airport before deportation.
According to sources, the Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi.
The Indian Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the case, the sources added.
“We so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination. We continue to follow up on the matter,” the sources added.
A disturbing video of an Indian student being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by US officials at Newark Airport sparked outrage on Monday.
The clip, filmed by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, shows at least four officers restraining the student, with two kneeling on his back and with his hands tied.
The Indian consulate general in New York yesterday said they had seen social media posts and were in touch with local authorities.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate today raised the issue at a press conference, where she said: “Indian origin students have been troubled, their visas are not getting processed, admissions are getting rejected… America sent back our 682 people handcuffed. Who gave them this right to treat people like animals?
“The American President is repeatedly insulting us. He took credit for the ceasefire and is equating us with Pakistan. He is threatening us with tariffs. Why is our country getting insulted like this?”
