India hosting first-ever Capacity Building Programme on UNSC Resolution 1540

New Delhi, Feb 25 (UNI) At least 24 government experts from eight countries in the Asia-Pacific region are participating in the first-ever Capacity Building Programme on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 and Strategic Trade Controls for Asia-Pacific countries, being held in India from Feb 25-27.

The eight countries participating include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iraq, Laos, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand. It is being held at the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN), Palasamudram, Andhra Pradesh.

It is being organised by the Government of India, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), a statement said.

Speakers and experts from the UNSC 1540 Committee and UNODA; India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, National Authority Chemical Weapons Convention, Department of Biotechnology, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs; and Indian industry, will be sharing their implementation experiences and best practices on relevant aspects of the UNSC Resolution 1540 and Strategic Trade Controls.

This flagship programme is a reaffirmation of India’s robust credentials on non-proliferation and further demonstration of India’s contribution to the international non-proliferation architecture, it said.

The MEA spokesperson said in a post on X:

“The India-UNODA Capacity Building Program on UNSC Resolution 1540 & Strategic Trade Controls for Asia-Pacific countries was inaugurated today at @nacincbic.

“This first-of-its-kind programme is a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to the international non-proliferation architecture.”

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 was adopted on April 28, 2004, and it aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, as well as their means of delivery, to non-state actors.

The resolution imposes legally binding obligations on all UN Member States to adopt and enforce effective measures to prevent the proliferation of these weapons and their means of delivery.
