India flags legal process as NIA arrests seven foreign nationals over Myanmar terror links

New Delhi, Mar 19 (UNI) India said on Thursday that consular access requests for seven foreign nationals arrested in a terror probe would be handled in accordance with legal procedures, as investigators questioned six Ukrainians and one American detained over alleged links to militant training activities in Myanmar.

India’s foreign ministry said the case was under investigation and that due process would be followed in handling requests from the detainees’ home countries.

“As you know, this is a legal matter. The relevant Government of India agencies are investigating it presently,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “We have received a consular access request and these will be addressed keeping in mind the legal requirements involved in this particular case.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested the individuals on Wednesday, accusing them of illegally entering India and being involved in providing training in weapons handling and drone operations across the border in Myanmar.

“They were produced before a special NIA court, which remanded all seven accused to 11 days of NIA custody,” the agency said in a statement, adding that interrogations are under way to uncover details of their activities and network.

The NIA said preliminary findings indicated that drones used for training were procured from Europe. Investigators are also examining whether the accused had links to any terrorist organisations and if they were part of a broader network involved in training operatives.
