New Delhi, (UNI) India is on the verge of securing their first-ever semi-final berth at the Asian Women’s Handball Championship, with a crucial match against Japan on Friday that could also earn them a spot in the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championship in Germany and the Netherlands.
However, India’s hopes were slightly dented on Wednesday when they suffered a narrow 32-30 defeat to the Islamic Republic of Iran in their second Group B match at the 2024 Asian Championship, held at the Indira Gandhi Arena here.
Despite a heroic performance from goalkeeper Nina Shil, who was pivotal in repelling Iran’s relentless attacks, India could not hold on for the win. Shalini Thakur had given India an early lead with a brilliant finish, while Bhawana Sharma, Player of the Match in their victory over Hong Kong China, added a penalty goal shortly after to boost India’s chances.
The opening was fast-paced and full of fierce challenges, setting the tone for an exciting first half. Shil, along with captain Diksha Kumari, who was also a gold medallist at the SAF Games, ensured that the two teams went into the break neck and neck.
Following the restart, Shil’s resolute defending gave the Indian attackers a solid foundation to reduce Iran’s lead, but despite breaking through Iran’s defence several times, the hosts could not capitalise on their chances, falling just short in the final moments.
In earlier matches, the People’s Republic of China bounced back from their loss to Kazakhstan with a dominant 47-10 victory over Singapore, while Japan continued their strong tournament performance with a 47-6 win over Singapore. The Republic of Korea defeated Kazakhstan 30-20 in another thrilling encounter.
India’s spirited display against Iran has kept their dreams alive, and they will need a win against Japan in their final group match to secure a semi-final spot and advance to the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championship.
In the day’s remaining fixtures, Iran will take on Hong Kong China, Kazakhstan will face Singapore, and South Korea will meet China.
