INDIA Alliance plans nationwide protest against voter list revision (SIR)

New Delhi, November 4 (UNI): The INDIA bloc has announced a nationwide protest campaign against the Election Commission’s Special Summary Revision (SIR) of the voter list, coinciding with the start of the second phase of the revision exercise today.

The ongoing phase will run until December 4.

During this phase, voter list revisions are being carried out in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Assam will conduct the process separately under Supreme Court supervision.

This marks the second round of the SIR conducted by the Election Commission, following Bihar, where the final electoral roll—with nearly 7.42 crore voters—was published on September 30. The Commission has said the clean-up of electoral rolls across the listed states and union Territories will conclude on February 7, 2026, when the final rolls are scheduled to be released.

According to sources, the INDIA Alliance plans to launch a nationwide agitation over the SIR after the Bihar Assembly elections. The bloc is also preparing to approach the Supreme Court collectively once again on the issue.

Sources added that a formal meeting of the alliance leaders will be held after the Bihar polls to finalise the plan for both the legal and the national protest.

For now, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren have agreed with the Congress leadership to intensify the movement over the voter list revision issue.

It is worth noting that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had announced the second phase of the SIR during a press conference on October 27. According to him, the SIR will begin with the enumeration phase on November 4 and continue until December 4. The Election Commission will release the draft voter list on December 9 and the final list on February 7.
