Kolkata, ” In general if you have not played with the pink ball it will be challenging through out the game. It would require more concentration solid technique, more compact game compared to red ball purely because in the longer format the ball does a lot more than the white ball, ” according to India Team skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday.
” And not having a great visibility and the ability to pick that colour makes it even more difficult. The decision making has to be very precise like the idea of offstumps. Even when we practised yesterday we felt as if the ball is far but it hits you very quickly. The extra glaze of the ball is making it travel faster. It hits the hand hard. It should excite everyone. Sometime you have to change the template. I think we have to be very precise and our skills will be tested in this Test, ” Kohli stated.
” One before the Test could be a pink ball practice game. If it’s second or third Test I would ideally like to have more break between the two Tests and have a practice game before the pink ball Test whenever that is obviously under lights. It can’t be a pink ball practice tour game before the series and the Test is actually the third game. That would not make any sense. ”
“It can’t be that suddenly… This one we have been talking about for awhile. You can’t just go and two days before you say you’re playing a pink ball Test in a week’s time. We didnt really think it was logical from that point of view. It needed a bit of preparation. Once you get used to playing it there’s no problem playing at all. You can plan in advance. We just thought it was a spontaneous. ”
” It’s a great occasion. We were pretty excited about the new challenge. Last time we saw a similar buzz at Eden Gardens when India played Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup (2016). There too, dignitaries came and former captains were felicitated in front of packed crowds. We’re expecting a similar atmosphere here. It can be a daunting, intimidating experience for a player too. It can be exciting for batsmen and bowlers as well. I think the first hour will be very important. The energy level will be on a high. ”
” Imagine the boost our bowlers have standing at the mark with some 80,000 fans cheering for him. I’m expecting very exciting cricket in the first hour because the energy level will be very high. I’m sure the fans would enjoy it. It’s a landmark Test and we’re lucky to be the first Indian team playing it. It’s a great honour, ” Kohli noted.
” I think in India we have one big factor which is dew, which is something we’ll have to, we spoke to the match referee yesterday, something we’ll have to speak about and discuss as we go along with playing the game. You can’t really predict how much mopping or cleaning of the dew is required at what stage, you never know when the dew is going to arrive. He (match referee) had the same discussion yesterday that we’ll have to play it as it comes and manage it in the best way possible. ”
” That is one difference in playing day-night test in India compared to any other country. Apart from that I don’t really feel there is any major difference, kust the dew factor is something which is definitely going to be a factor in India in the late last session. That’s the only change I see. Obviously the pitches and how much the kookaboora does it is a different ball game altogether, the quality of the ball. ”
” All those things matter a lot but invariably I think the pink ball test even more so in foreign touirs and foreign conditions will tend to do a lot more than it would in India probably in the second and third sessions as well. These are the few changed I presume but again they could be totally inaccurate until you go out and experience that. From the outside, it looks like these are the few things that might be different. ”
” Pink ball can address dwindling test attendance? 5-6 years down the link pink-ball will be lone long-form cricket? In my opinion, this should not become the only way test cricket is played. Because then you are losing out on that nervousness of the first session in the morning. You can bring excitement into test cricket but you can’t purely make test cricket based on just entertaining people,
” Kohli observed.
” Entertainment of test cricket lies in the fact that a batsman is trying to survive a session and the bowler is trying to set a batsman out. If people don’t respond to that, too bad. Whoever wants to respond to that would come and watch test cricket. If I don’t like test cricket, you can’t push me into liking it.
If someone gets excitement or boost from watching the battle between bat and ball and great session of test cricket, in my opinion those are the people that should come and watch test crickety because they understand what’s going on. Yes, it’s great to create more buzz around test cricket. The first four days here are soldout, which is amazing for test cricket. ”
” I think Rahul bhai mentioned recently that if we have a test calendar where series and the tests are fixed, it would bring a lot more system and a lot more sync into people planning their calendars as well. It can be random. If you have centres which are marked an if you have test calendars which are marked, people will have a better system as to how we can plan to get into those tests.
People are not just going to leave work and come to a test match if they don’t know what’s going on. They can plan things. I think this can be a one-off thing, it should not be a regular scenario, ” Kohli added.
