IMD warns of rain and hailstorms over Northwest India, including Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued orange alert warning for moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and isolated hailstorms over Northwest India including Delhi-NCR region and Central India for the next two days.

“Due to interaction of Western Disturbance with easterly winds over central parts of India, light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm very likely over Northwest and Central India on 27th and 28th December,” the IMD said.

According to IMD, heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Uttarakhand, Southeast Himachal Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Chandigarh today.

However, as the National Capital Region continues to witness light drizzle since this morning, the air quality remains in the “very poor” category, with an AQI of 355 recorded as of 2 pm today. The city is also covered by a blanket of fog, reducing visibility.

No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected during the next 48 hours, followed by a fall of 2-4°C over Northwest, West, Central, and East India during the subsequent three days,” the IMD said.

The weather department also forecast coldwave and cold day conditions in some parts of Himachal Pradesh from 29th to 31st December.

Cold day conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on 27th and 28th December,” the IMD noted.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected during late night and early morning hours in isolated pockets of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till 30th December.

The IMD also predicted ground frost conditions in isolated pockets of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on 27th December.
