IMD issues red alert in Delhi-NCR, intense downpour by afternoon

New Delhi July 29 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Delhi-NCR, forecasting intense rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning and adjoining areas over the next two hours.

The regional Met Centre also forecast that the rain is likely to continue over the next seven days, until August 3. Orange alerts have been issued in the areas, including Mungeshpur, Najafgarh, Jafarpur, Pitampura, DU North Campus, Ridge, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Delhi SFD, New Delhi Railway Station, Pusa, Bahai, Qutub Minar, Ayanagar.

The maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are likely to be in the range of 29 to 31°C and 23 to 25 °C respectively. The minimum temperature will be above normal by up to 1 to 2 °C and the maximum temperature will be below normal by up to 3 to 5 °C.

In west India, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Konkan, Gujarat region, Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 29 July. There could be moderate rainfall in several places, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya from July 29 to August 3.

From 29-31 July, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh can witness heavy rainfall. Similar conditions could be seen in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from July 29-August 3, over Bihar from July 29-August 2, and over Jharkhand, Gangetic and West Bengal from July 29-30.

Odisha will also see heavy rainfall on July 29, with very heavy rainfall over Bihar on July 29, and over Madhya Pradesh on July 29. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will witness very heavy rainfall on 2 and 3 August. The IMD predicts moderate rainfall at several places accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (speeds reaching 30-40 kmph) likely over the region during the next 5 days.
