Shimla, Nov 27 (UNI) Winter tightened its grip on Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, with high-altitude regions witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures. According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at minus 7.3°C, making it the coldest location for the second consecutive day.
The past 24-hour temperature summary in the bulletin shows that minimum temperatures across many stations ranged from minus 7°C to 10°C, with several locations remaining below normal by 2-4 degrees.
The cold wave conditions were accompanied by dense fog in pockets of Bilaspur, Mandi and Sundernagar. The IMD has issued a specific warning for dense fog over and around the reservoir area of the Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur and parts of the Balh Valley in Mandi during early morning hours for the next two days.
Authorities have also confirmed that the Keylong-Leh highway, a crucial link to the high-altitude tribal belt, now stands officially closed for winter due to heavy icing and plummeting temperatures in Lahaul-Spiti. The closure follows recurring night temperatures well below freezing, as reflected in the high-hill temperature ranges shown in the bulletin’s summary.
Despite the intense cold in most regions, major tourist destinations continued to experience bright sunshine and pleasant day temperatures. Shimla, Dalhousie and Dharamshala reported clear skies and mild daytime warmth, although visitors are advised to brace for biting cold after sunset.
Maximum temperatures across the state remained between 12°C and 26°C, with Paonta Sahib recording the highest at 26°C on the previous day.
The IMD has reiterated that dry weather will prevail statewide for the coming week, and no impact of volcanic ash has been observed anywhere in the state. With thick fog settling near major water bodies and freezing conditions over the high reaches, the weather office has advised caution for motorists, particularly during morning hours.
The state’s winter conditions are expected to intensify further as December approaches.
