Heavy rains lash Delhi-NCR, IMD issues red alert

New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) Heavy rains battered parts of Delhi-NCR today morning, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, warning of moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds upto 30-40 kmph.

Localities falling under the red alert include Preet Vihar, Shahdara, Seelampur, Vivek Vihar, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Palwal, Hodal, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Mathura.

An orange alert has also been issued for northwest and southwest Delhi, along with neighbouring regions in Haryana and Rajasthan, where light to moderate rain is expected.

In related developments, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning major infrastructure upgrades at three key intersections, including routes leading to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), and ITO. Plans are underway to construct elevated corridors or underpasses at these locations to eliminate signal-based delays and ease congestion.

At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, trials of full-body scanners for passengers have also begun. Initially scheduled for May, the trials commenced on June 16 and have been active for over a month. Four scanners have been installed — two at Terminal 1 and two at Terminal 3 — as part of a broader push to enhance security measures.
