Heavy rainfall alert issued for 13 Haryana districts

Chandigarh, Aug 30 (UNI) A rainfall alert has been issued for 13 districts in Haryana, with authorities closely monitoring the situation as the Markanda River in Shahabad surges, carrying approximately 25,000 cusecs of water. Local administration has declared an alert in surrounding areas to ensure public safety.

In Yamunanagar, the Yamuna River’s water level has dropped below 50,000 cusecs, a significant decrease from Friday evening’s recorded flow of 90,926 cusecs at the Hathnikund Barrage, which had raised concerns among officials.

Following the flooding caused by the Tangri River in Ambala on Friday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini directed all district deputy commissioners to conduct surveys of rivers and prepare for emergency situations. He also instructed officials to devise contingency plans for villages, settlements, and colonies near riverbanks.

Haryana has recorded 24% above-normal rainfall this season. According to the weather department, the state received 426.5 mm of rainfall by August 29, against an expected average of 344.6 mm. Yamunanagar saw the highest rainfall at 900 mm, followed by Mahendragarh at 693 mm, while Sirsa (200 mm) and Kaithal (289.3 mm) recorded the lowest.

On Friday, the Tangri River’s overflow led to flooding in 17 residential areas and a cremation ground in Ambala. In Panchkula’s Morni area, landslides damaged roads, isolating the region from urban centres. In Narnaul, heavy rainfall caused waterlogging at the official residence of Deputy Commissioner Captain Manoj Kumar, requiring motor pumps to drain the water.

Due to the adverse conditions, Indian Railways cancelled 46 trains to and from Jammu and short-terminated five others.
