Haryana on high alert for floods: orange, yellow alerts for 22 districts

Chandigarh, Sep 1 (UNI) Haryana is on high alert as rising river levels and heavy rainfall threaten widespread flooding. The Ghaggar River in Sirsa, Yamuna in Faridabad, and Markanda in Kurukshetra have reached or crossed danger levels, driven by heavy rains in neighboring Punjab and the Himalayan region, officials said on Sunday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a high alert at 8:30 am, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 36 to 48 hours, with monsoon activity expected to intensify until September 2. An orange alert has been issued for 11 districts: Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Kaithal, Panipat, Sonipat, Rohtak, Gurugram, and Faridabad for Monday. A yellow alert covers Sirsa, Fatehabad, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Jind, Mewat, and Palwal, with 17 districts under a yellow alert on Tuesday.

Panchkula has seen continuous rainfall since early Monday, with the Ghaggar River’s water levels rising sharply since 3 am, raising concerns for adjacent districts, including Fatehabad and Sirsa. Disaster management teams are on standby, with relief and rescue operations on high alert.
