- Miraculous recovery
Bhopal: A 15-year-old girl, Isra Khan, suffering from severe spinal tuberculosis and a massive abscess that had entirely eroded one vertebra, leading to a prominent hunchback, has made a remarkable recovery at Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital. Isra, previously admitted to a private hospital with no effective treatment, faced imminent paralysis of both legs without urgent intervention.
Her father, Raees Khan, a gardener at Dilip Buildcon, contacted Dr. Suneet Tandon, Head of Orthopedics and Superintendent of Hamidia Hospital, who admitted Isra on June 14, 2025. Dilip Suryavanshi, MD of Dilip Buildcon, even offered to send Isra to Mumbai if treatment in Bhopal wasn’t feasible. However, Hamidia Hospital accepted the challenge.
After thorough diagnostics, Isra underwent a complex spine surgery on June 23, 2025. Over a liter of pus was drained, and her severely deformed spine was meticulously straightened using pedicle screw technique and rods. A major risk was potential nerve damage during the correction, which could cause paralysis. To mitigate this, a special Multi-Modal System for Intraoperative Monitoring was flown in from Delhi, continuously tracking brain, spinal cord, and leg nerves during the two-hour procedure.
Isra has made a full recovery, regained mobility, and was discharged today, July 10, 2025. The challenging surgery was successfully performed by the orthopedic team including Dr. Vaibhav Jain, Dr. Rahul Verma, Dr. Ashish Gohiya, and Dr. Suneet Tandon, with crucial support from the Anesthesia Department’s Dr. Twinkle Kewal, Dr. Urmila Kesari, and Dr. R.P. Kaushal. All treatment was entirely free under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
“We had lost all hope. This hospital has given our daughter a new life,” said a grateful Raees Khan.
