Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa to lead Indian challenge at 2025 Grand Swiss

Bern, July 08 (UNI) FIDE today announced the list of players for the forth editoin of the 2025 Grand Swiss, the tournament will be played from September 3 to 16 in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).

Grand Swiss is one of the most significant tournaments in the chess calendar as it also serves as a pathway to the Candidates tournament.

The tournament’s 11-round format will see 172 players compete– 116 in the Open and 56 in the Women’s tournament.

Top two qualifiers in both the Open and the Women’s competition will qualify for the 2026 Candidates tournament, where the challenger for the title of World Champion will be determined.

In the Open competition, the Indian challenge will be led by Arjun Erigaisi, World Champion D Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa R. Anish Giri and Nihal Sarin will be the other prominent Indians in the fray.

Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, former World Champion Ding Liren and Fabiano Caruana will be some of the notable absentees.

Women’s Grand Swiss will feature Former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi, Humpy Koneru, Anna Muzychuk and Kateryna Lagno. Vaishali Rameshbabu, the 2023 winner will also take part.
