Govt issues notification for population census in 2027

New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) The government of Monday officially notified that the next Census of the population of India will be conducted in the year 2027.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) made the announcement through a Gazette notification issued under Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948 (Act 37 of 1948).

“The reference date for the said census shall be 00.00 hours of the 1st day of March, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” the notification said.

“In respect of the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date shall be 00:00 hours of the 1st day of October, 2026,” the notification said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reviewed the preparation for the forthcoming Census of India here. The meeting was attended by the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials.
