Governor Honours Bagh Print Master at Lucknow’s Craftroots Exhibition

From Madhya Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel inaugurated the prestigious “Craftroots Exhibition” at the historic Safed Baradari yesterday, highlighting the importance of India’s traditional crafts. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.

A focal point of the inauguration was the Governor’s special interaction with renowned Bagh print artisans Mohammad Arif Khatri and Mohammad Ali Khatri, who traveled from Bagh village in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district.

Governor Patel showed keen interest in the ancient, completely hand-done process of Bagru printing.  Khatri explained that the craft uses wooden blocks on cotton and silk, utilizing natural dyes derived from plants, flowers, and roots. He noted that the unique river water of the Bagh region gives the colors their distinctive brilliance.

Patel praised the artisans’ work, emphasizing that these traditional arts are the “true identity of India” and must be preserved and promoted, urging the youth to engage with them. Mohammad Arif Khatri, an ‘Award of Excellence’ recipient, is part of a family legacy that brought the craft global recognition, with their work even being presented to and worn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The exhibition runs until October 14, showcasing master artisans from across the country.
