Mumbai, Oct 4 (UNI) Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.
This marks Gill’s first stint as leader of the ODI team, although he has previously captained India in Tests and T20Is. The move is seen as a strategic step ahead of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced the squad for the five-match T20I series that will follow the ODIs.
Despite stepping down as captain, Rohit Sharma remains in the ODI squad, returning to the Indian setup alongside veteran batter Virat Kohli. The duo last played for India in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain.
Gill, 26, has limited experience in 50-over captaincy, having led teams only six times in List-A cricket, achieving a 5-1 win-loss record.
Earlier this year, he was named Test captain, beginning with a 2-2 series draw against England and registering a commanding innings-and-140-run victory over West Indies in his sixth Test in charge.
In his ODI career, Gill has played 55 matches, scoring 2,775 runs, including eight centuries.
Further updates are awaited.
