Gill, Iyer on path to recovery: Mornie Morkel

Ranchi, Nov 28 (UNI) India’s cricket team is set for a boost as key players Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer make steady progress in their recoveries ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa.

Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the Kolkata Test, and Iyer, sidelined after a spleen laceration in Australia last month, are now on the path to rejoining the squad.

Speaking here today, India bowling coach Morne Morkel said, “I spoke to Shubman two days ago, and he is recovering well. Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. We are looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad.”

Gill is likely to miss the series, with Yashasvi Jaiswal expected to replace him in the ODI lineup. Shreyas’ return at No. 4 is still uncertain, with Rishabh Pant and Tilak Varma in contention.

India enter the series under pressure after losing five of their last seven Tests at home. Morkel acknowledged the need to refocus and said the shift to white-ball cricket offers a fresh start.

“It’s a change of colour and ball, which always brings different energy. South Africa comes with momentum, so it will be important to start well and play good cricket over the next week or two,” he said.

The presence of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, back in international cricket in India since retiring from Tests earlier this year, provides experience for the squad. Morkel expressed confidence in their fitness and ability to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

India’s practice session today showcased pitches with good pace and bounce, leaving selection decisions for the opening combination, including the choice between all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar, to be finalised after training.

The series marks a crucial opportunity for India to regroup, with Morkel emphasising the importance of preparation and focus in the lead-up to the matches.
