Sydney, Jan 5 (UNI) India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday commended Rohit Sharma for his decision to step down as captain following a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Speaking to the media, Gambhir described Rohit’s move to hand over the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah as a selfless and team-first decision, though it did not ultimately change the series’ outcome.
Rohit’s struggles with the bat were evident throughout the series. The opener managed a meagre batting average of 6.20, scoring only 31 runs in three Tests on Australia tour, with just one score in double digits. Over his last 15 innings, his performance dipped further, averaging only 10.93.
Despite these challenges, Gambhir lauded Rohit’s prioritisation of team interests over personal ambitions. “It takes immense courage to admit when things aren’t working and step aside for the greater good of the team,” Gambhir said, while also urging the media to exercise restraint in their criticism of the beleaguered cricketer.
India’s fortunes in the series, however, did not improve under new leadership. The team lost the final Test in Sydney by six wickets, culminating in a 1-3 series defeat. Gambhir, while addressing Rohit’s future in the playing XI, refused to confirm his inclusion for the Sydney Test, citing pitch conditions as the decisive factor.
Rohit’s form has been a matter of concern throughout the season, with only 164 runs in 15 innings across three series, averaging a dismal 10.93.
The veteran batsman’s continued slump has sparked debates about his role in the team, with selectors now facing tough decisions ahead of the next series.
