G20’s indifferent stance on Russia sanctions shifted in response to US tariffs: Moscow

Moscow, Sep 29 (UNI) While the G20 countries were initially indifferent to unilateral sanctions against Russia, the situation has changed due to US tariffs, Russia’s G20 Sherpa Svetlana Lukash claimed, according to a media report.

“The topic of unlawful trade restrictions is a contentious issue, particularly within the G20, largely due to the unilateral sanctions imposed on Russia. Interestingly, when Russia previously raised concerns about these sanctions, many countries were largely indifferent, viewing it as a matter specific only to Russia.

“However, as more nations now confront the threat of tariffs, there is a noticeable shift in discourse, with increased discussions about unilateral trade restrictions and violations of World Trade Organization rules,” Lukash said in an interview to RIA Novosti.

Lukash pointed out that perspectives are shifting, and there is growing recognition of the existence of double standards.

“The double standards that Western countries impose on Russia and others are becoming increasingly apparent. While I doubt the G20 will achieve consensus on the tariff issue, it remains a significant ‘bull in a china shop’ in negotiations, likely influencing the outcome leading up to the [G20] summit,” Lukash added.

“Russia has consistently championed equal and mutually beneficial relations and is a member of the World Trade Organisation. We believe in the importance of upholding the principles and norms of international law. The trade restrictions imposed on us, as well as others, negatively impact not only Russia but also many nations, especially in the Global South and the broader global majority. Therefore, it is crucial to lift all such restrictions to promote sustainable development to benefit the entire world,” Lukash noted.
