Forces continue ops in Manipur; arms seized, suspects held

Imphal, Aug 7 (UNI) Security forces in Manipur continued their intensified operations across fringe and vulnerable areas of multiple districts yesterday. These efforts are part of ongoing measures to maintain law and order and curb unlawful activities.

Police today said arms and explosives were recovered during a search operation in a village under the jurisdiction of Churachandpur police station in Churachandpur district. The seizure included an assault rifle with an empty magazine, two improvised mortars, four improvised rocket bombs, and nineteen improvised mortar shells.

In separate operations, security personnel apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in unlawful activities. One suspect was arrested from an area in Imphal East district and was found in possession of a wallet containing cash and a voter identity card. Preliminary investigation indicates the individual’s involvement in a case of abduction for ransom and unlawful confinement of a civilian at a farmhouse in Lamdeng Khunou earlier in August 2024.

Another suspect was detained from his residence in Imphal West district. He is believed to be involved in extortion activities targeting the general public. A mobile phone and an identity document were recovered from his possession.

In parallel with these actions, Manipur police have been conducting a special drive to detect individuals without valid documentation under the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system. Since the beginning of the drive last week, a total of 2,412 individuals have been verified. Of these, 170 were found without ILP passes and 134 were carrying expired ILP documents.

All violators were taken to the ILP counter at Mao Gate and were made to obtain the required permits. Authorities have confirmed that no illegal immigrants have been detected so far.

The drive has been undertaken by the district-level task force and covers market areas, National Highway-2, Maram-Peren road, Tadubi-Tolloi road, and various inter-village routes within police station jurisdictions. Comprehensive checking continues at all border entry points. Officials stated that the special verification campaign will continue in the coming days.
