Ferguson, Jamieson shine as NZ crush SA by 8 wickets

Auckland, March 20 (UNI) Lockie Ferguson’s incisive opening spell and Kyle Jamieson’s late firepower set New Zealand on course for a commanding eight-wicket win over South Africa in the third T20I of the South Africa tour of New Zealand at Eden Park here on Friday.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, New Zealand struck immediately. Ferguson removed Wiaan Mulder for a duck in the second over, caught by Cole McConchie, setting the tone for a disciplined bowling display.

Mitchell Santner claimed key wickets, including Connor Esterhuizen and Jason Smith, while Jamieson picked off George Linde and Gerald Coetzee with fine catches by Tom Latham.

Ben Sears cleaned up Keshav Maharaj, and Lutho Sipamla struck late, dismissing Tim Robinson LBW in the 16th over, giving South Africa brief respite in an otherwise difficult innings.

South Africa’s innings featured a late flourish from Nqobani Mokoena, who cleared the ropes multiple times in the 18th and 20th overs. He smashed sixes off Sears and Jamieson, including an 80-metre hit over wide long-on and a four following a streaky inside edge, but the surge came too late to alter the match outcome.

Chasing 137, New Zealand raced to victory in 16.2 overs. Devon Conway’s explosive 39 off 26 balls and Tom Latham’s unbeaten 63 guided the home side home, with Tim Robinson adding 17 before being dismissed by Sipamla.

Latham and Conway combined for several punishing shots, including sixes off Nqobani Mokoena and Keshav Maharaj, showcasing their dominance over the Proteas’ attack. Nick Kelly remained not out on 1, and extras, including 10 wides and a no-ball, added 17 runs.

Ferguson’s early breakthrough, Jamieson’s precise spells, and New Zealand’s calculated batting approach ensured a smooth chase, sealing a series sweep.

New Zealand: Tom Latham 63*, Devon Conway 39, Tim Robinson 17; Extras 17; Total 137/2 in 16.2 overs.

South Africa: Nqobani Mokoena 26*, George Linde 23, Gerald Coetzee 16; Extras 3; Total 136/9 in 20 overs.
