Dehradun: Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, Governor of Uttarakhand, was presented the road safety book Bharat Mein Sadak Durghatnayein by Padma Shri awardee and eminent orthopaedic surgeon Prof. (Dr) B. K. S. Sanjay, President of AIIMS Guwahati, along with co-author Dr Gaurav Sanjay, at Lok Bhawan, Dehradun on 11 February. The publication, uniquely authored by the father son duo, is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening road safety awareness in India.
The book examines the growing crisis of road traffic accidents in the country, analysing their causes, consequences and preventive strategies. Drawing upon extensive clinical experience, the authors highlight not only the physical injuries suffered by victims but also the psychological trauma and the broader social and economic burden on families and the healthcare system.
It underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road infrastructure, strengthened trauma care facilities and large-scale public awareness campaigns. The authors also advocate integrating road safety education into school curricula and increasing the number of well-regulated driving schools. During the interaction, Prof. Sanjay suggested that AIIMS institutions nationwide could function as nodal agencies for regional road safety outreach. The Governor appreciated the scholarly initiative, describing it as a timely contribution towards fostering a safer road culture and encouraging policy dialogue.
