- MP Pollution Control Board issues public safety advisory
Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) has issued an important advisory warning citizen about the serious risks of entering dry wells, highlighting potential accidents caused by toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, and sudden water ingress.
Key hazards identified:
* Toxic gases: Deadly gases such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, methane, and carbon dioxide can accumulate in dry wells, causing unconsciousness, suffocation, or even death.
* Oxygen deficiency: Poor ventilation can lead to dangerously low oxygen levels, resulting in breathing difficulty or fainting.
* Sudden water influx: Unexpected water entry can trap or drown individuals inside.
Safety recommendations:
* Test air quality: Before entering, lower a lantern into the well using a rope. If it extinguishes, it signals a lack of oxygen or presence of toxic gases—do not enter.
* Avoid Unauthorized Entry: Never attempt to enter a well without proper training and safety gear.
* Call for Help: Immediately inform emergency services (police, fire, or rescue teams) and provide details about the location and situation.
* Secure the Area: Keep bystanders away from the well to prevent further accidents.
Rescue guidelines:
* Trained Personnel Only: Rescue operations must be conducted by trained teams equipped with PPE, breathing gear, harnesses, and ropes.
* Atmospheric Monitoring: Monitor gas levels inside the well before attempting rescue.
* Safe Extraction: Use appropriate methods such as stretchers or pulley systems to safely retrieve the victim.
* First Aid and Medical Care: Provide immediate first aid and transport the victim to a hospital if necessary.
