England star Dawid Malan retires from International cricket

London, (UNI) England cricket star Dawid Malan, a former World No.1 T20I batter, has announced his retirement from International cricket on Wednesday.

Malan’s last appearance for England came at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, and he has not played at the international level since.

Over his career, Malan accumulated 4,416 runs across 114 matches—22 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20Is—averaging 37.74 with eight centuries and 31 fifties.

Malan’s T20I debut in June 2017 was marked by a notable 44-ball 78 against South Africa, and he truly made his mark in the T20 format. In September 2020, he reached the top of the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings and became the fastest men’s player to amass 1,000 Test runs in just 24 innings. He also achieved a record peak rating of 915 in the ICC T20I Player Rankings for batting, the highest ever.

A key member of England’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2022, Malan was sidelined during the knockout stages due to a groin injury sustained against Sri Lanka in the group stage.

Malan’s ODI career was equally impressive. Entering the 2023 World Cup in top form, he scored five centuries in just 15 innings between June 2022 and September 2023.

In England’s second World Cup match against Bangladesh, he scored a crucial 140 off 107 balls, though England’s campaign ended in disappointment with an early exit from the group stages. Malan was England’s top run-scorer in the tournament with 404 runs, including one century and two fifties.

Reflecting on his retirement, Malan said, “It has been an incredible journey since July 2017. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats. Cricket, like most sports, often leaves players wishing they had achieved more. Despite the pressures and challenges, I retire genuinely satisfied and proud of what I’ve accomplished.”
