Encroachment threatens Mor Van in Shahpura

Bhopal: Mor Van at Shahpura hill, known for its thriving population of peacocks, monkeys, and reptiles, is now facing an unusual threat — its gradual conversion into a burial ground.

The forest patch, a popular spot for morning walkers, is witnessing clandestine burial activities, particularly during evening hours when public presence is limited. Locals say this disturbing trend undermines the ecological sanctity of the protected area.

Speaking to this correspondent, Chief Conservator of Forests Rajesh Khare stated he was unaware of the situation. However, residents expressed deep concern. Dr Ajeet Saluja, a resident of Akash Ganga Colony, who is credited with planting thousands of trees that transformed the once barren CPA land into today’s Mor Van, said, “This should not be happening. The area was developed for public welfare and environmental preservation, not for such activities.”

Echoing his concern, Atul Bohre, another resident, remarked, “When the government has already allocated designated places for such rituals, people should not conduct burials in a protected green zone.”

Locals fear that if the practice continues unchecked, Mor Van’s ecological balance and its role as a community green lung could be irreparably harmed.
