Elder brother awards life imprisonment for killing his younger in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 15 (UNI) Two different courts in Tripura yesterday pronounced two judgements where a middle-aged man was awarded life imprisonment for killing his brother, while another was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his wife’s minor student.

The additional session judge of Kamalpur under Tripura’s Dhalai district yesterday sentenced one Shyamal Gour to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, or else to serve six more months of imprisonment, for murdering his younger brother Uttam Gour last year.

According to records, Shyamal Gour (45) and Uttam Gour (40)—brothers to each other—lived separately in the same plot of land in Gourpara village of Salema in the district. They did not have good relations, but the longstanding enmity between the two brothers took a serious turn on March 17 last year.

At night Uttam’s wife and son heard a scream and rushed to the courtyard of the house and saw Shyamal Gour striking repeatedly on the throat and neck of Uttam Gour who had fallen on the ground. Seeing Uttam’s wife and son, Shyamal fled away leaving him critically injured.

Later, Uttam was taken first to Kamalpur and then to Dhalai district hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s family filed an FIR with the Salema police station and police arrested the accused Shyamal based on primafice. Police had filed the charge sheet late last year, and after a long trial and testimony of nine witnesses, the court pronounced the judgement.

Meanwhile, District and Session Court of Unokoti District sentenced 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to the husband of a home teacher identified as Harkumar Debnath (44) for raping an 11-year-old minor in Kumarghat.

The victim, a Class VI student, used to go to the house of one of her home tutors in the locality.

Taking advantage of his wife’s absence, Debnath raped the minor girl for multiple times. After a few days, she would not agree to go to the teacher’s house and told her mother that she had been raped by Harkumar. The family lodged a complaint on July 8, 2023, and the court convicted the man.
