Bhopal, In the state, participation from all sections of society is being ensured in the cleaning work of water sources under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan. The results of this are becoming visible to society. To explain the importance of water, cultural activities are being used. In some areas, public representatives have taken out foot marches (padayatra) to give the message of the importance of water to the general public.
Foot march to convert seasonal rivers into perennial ones
At Bairasia in Bhopal district, under the Jal Ganga Conservation Campaign, a ground-breaking ceremony of the external river site was held, and a foot march was started under the leadership of Bairasia MLA Shri Vishnu Khatri to convert the external river into a perennial one. This march passed through various villages of the tehsil and ended at Khajuriya Ramdas. In Bairasia, water sources have been identified and a plan for their conservation has been prepared and work has started. An ancient stepwell has also been identified. The general public will be informed about its historical importance.
Efforts to recharge sources of single tap water schemes
In Vidisha district, for the sustainability and continuity of sources of single tap water schemes, recharge structures are being constructed by converging with MGNREGA schemes. For this, senior scientists from the Central Ground Water Board and state-level hydrogeologists visited selected villages of the district. Villagers were told that it is very important to conserve every drop of rainwater underground. Villagers were told about the method of recharging rainwater. They were informed that, according to the slope of the village, water can be directed and recharged through 3-meter filters into failed tube wells.
Special efforts for awareness
In Sehore district, since March 30, the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan has been ongoing. Under this campaign, many activities related to water conservation are being organized throughout the district. To make the public aware of water conservation, activities like wall writings, awareness rallies, posters and banners, rangoli, village assemblies, kalash (pot) processions, and pledges are being conducted. In many villages of the district, works like well repair, pond restoration, dam cleaning, etc., are being done, and citizens are being made to take the pledge for water conservation.
Work on 832 old water structures
In the 263 gram panchayats of Gwalior district, water structures are rapidly taking shape under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan. With the speeding up of works, the district’s ranking in the campaign has improved significantly. Somewhere farm ponds, somewhere Amrit Sarovars, and somewhere structures for recharging old wells are being constructed. Also, work on completing water structures from past years is being prioritized under the campaign. Currently, 1,610 works are ongoing in 263 gram panchayats of the district to conserve rainwater. Apart from this, work on 832 old water structures is also being done prominently. To increase public participation in the campaign, night chaupals are being organized to make villagers aware of water storage and usage. In all gram panchayats, 854 farm ponds have been approved, out of which work has started on 794. Similarly, 903 old wells have been approved for recharge, and construction of structures to recharge 810 of these wells is in progress. Six Amrit Sarovars have also been approved in the district. These large-scale water structures being constructed are not only aiding water conservation but also becoming a source of extra income for farmers through activities like fish farming and singhada (water chestnut) cultivation. Plantation on a large scale will also be done near farm ponds and Amrit Sarovars for environmental conservation.
Cleaning of ancient and historical stepwells
In Jhabua district’s Bhagor village, cleaning was done through community labor in the ancient and historic stepwell. Under Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav’s ambitious Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, a program of cleaning various water sources is being run. Under the direction of Collector Ms. Neha Meena, cleaning of the historic Kasara stepwell in Bhagor was done by the Madhya Pradesh Jan Abhiyan Parishad. District coordinator Shri Premsingh Chauhan said the stepwell was covered with tree leaves and dirt, which was cleaned with the help of the gram panchayat, students, and members of the Navankur organization. It is noteworthy that this is a very ancient stepwell made of large stones. In earlier times, people used to drink water from it. But now it had become filled with mud and leaves due to old age. Villagers cleaned it together, and water became visible. During the community labor program, everyone was made to take the pledge for water conservation under the campaign.
Cleaning of ancient Surajkund stepwell
In Indore district, under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan and under the guidance of the Jan Abhiyan Parishad, a mega campaign was organized to clean the ancient Surajkund stepwell located at the famous Mangleshwar Temple in Depalpur. Members of various local committees, students from the Chief Minister’s Community Leadership Program, Navankur, and many social workers participated in the campaign. During the cleaning, the stepwell was cleared of garbage to give the message of water conservation awareness. A seminar on the importance of water conservation was also held, and all participants were made to take a pledge. Everyone cleaned the stepwell through community labor.
Tree plantation plans near water areas
In Burhanpur district, under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan and on the instructions of Collector Shri Harsh Singh, the Water Resources Department is deepening the Savli pond. This will help supply water to the residents. The deepening will also benefit wildlife, animals, and nearby vegetation. The campaign, lasting three months, aims to create new ponds and restore, revive, and deepen old ponds, stepwells, and wells. A plan is also being made to plant trees near water areas.
Cleaning at Tapti Ghat
In Khandwa district’s Khalwa block, a cleaning campaign was run at Tapti Ghat in village Nagautar. The garbage collected from the ghat was properly disposed of. Villagers were made to take a pledge for water conservation. Children and villagers understood the importance of water and resolved to adopt water conservation in daily life. The cleaning work at the ghat will continue.
Rs 10 lakh approved for pond expansion
In Katni district’s Reethi Janpad Panchayat, cleaning and revival of various water sources—rivers, ponds, wells, stepwells—is being done in all gram panchayats. In the same sequence, Rs 10 lakh has been approved for pond expansion in Jamuniya village. This work is in progress. The gram panchayat has arranged for drinking water, shade, and a treatment kit at the worksite. Once the pond is restored, it will provide water for animals and villagers for personal use. This work will generate 2,500 man-days of employment for local rural laborers.
Water seminars, wall writings and cultural programmes for public awareness
In Narsinghpur district, cultural programmes were organized at NCI High School, Basuriya, under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan. Teachers informed students and the public about the importance of water conservation. Villagers were told that if we still don’t understand the importance of water, we may face severe problems in the future. We all must use water wisely and prevent its misuse for the sake of future generations. It is noteworthy that various programs are being conducted under the campaign running in the district till June 30. To inspire people toward water conservation and enrichment, seminars, rangoli competitions, wall writings, folk dramas, folk songs, and other activities are being held. Under the campaign, cleaning of wells, stepwells, ponds, reservoirs, and streams is being done at a war footing in various rural and urban areas of the district. With the participation of gram panchayats, schools, anganwadis, voluntary organizations, and common citizens, efforts are being made to revive these water sources.
Jal Hai To Kal Hai – let us all step forward together
In Shahdol district, the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan is in progress. Under the campaign running until June 30, 2025, efforts are being made to store, conserve, and enrich water. In all villages of the district’s Janpad Panchayats, villagers are enthusiastically participating in the campaign through community labor while understanding the importance of water. People are being told, “Jal Hai To Kal Hai – let us all step forward together.” Messages are being given for water conservation and enrichment. Under the campaign, residents of Ward No. 2 of Beohari Municipality cleaned the Choudhary pond and gave the message of water conservation through community labor.
