Shimla, (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, has cautioned that Himachal Pradesh is heading into a prolonged dry spell accompanied by a sharp fall in minimum temperatures, conditions that heighten the risk of frost across mid and higher hills over the next one week.
The advisory, issued in the latest Agromet Bulletin for the state, warns that the absence of rainfall since November 29 and the continuing clear skies are likely to deepen cold conditions in many districts.
According to the IMD’s extended forecast for December 5–11, most parts of the state would remain mainly dry, with minimum temperatures dropping to minus 8°C to 2°C in higher hills, 4 to 8°C in mid-hills, and 2 to 10°C in lower hills and plains.
Several pockets of Lahaul–Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, Kangra and Mandi are likely to record temperatures significantly below normal, increasing chances of ground frost.
The bulletin notes that persistent dry weather and increased evaporation may deplete soil moisture, affecting wheat, garlic, onion, and winter vegetables currently in sowing or vegetative stages.
Orchard belts have been asked to remain alert, particularly apple-growing zones, where cold injuries and early frost could harm stems and newly pruned areas. The IMD has advised farmers to retain soil moisture through mulching, avoid excessive irrigation to prevent surface run-off, and plan light irrigation during evening hours to mitigate frost impact.
In apple orchards, growers have been told to apply copper oxychloride for canker control after harvest and maintain orchard sanitation by removing fallen leaves and infected fruits. Livestock owners have been instructed to keep sheds dry, insulated and well-ventilated, and protect weak and young animals with jute coverings during night hours.
The advisory also recommends regular de-worming and ensuring availability of clean drinking water.
With cold wave-like conditions likely to strengthen, the IMD has urged farmers to follow district-wise agromet advisories through the Meghdoot app and monitor sudden temperature drops that may trigger frost formation.
